What to Do On Your Cover Letter

  • Follow up. This affirmative action is highly important and will greatly increase your possibility for an interview. A follow-up to your cover letter and resume application is usually a few days later (2-3) and is normally through a phone call.
  • Use 8 ½ x 11 “ size.
  • Keep your cover letter matching your resume.  This includes matching the font and format.
  • Your cover letter must always be typed.
  • Your font must always be legible.  Try to stick to classic fonts like Calibri or Garamond.
  • When addressing the specific person, always double-check to make sure you have spelled their name right. Always verify this spelling.
  • Always check grammar and spelling. A small grammar creates an instant bad first impression and can get your job application immediately knocked off the list. Use spell checks and online grammar resources. Read your cover letter aloud and give time (10 min)  in between each reading check.
  • Always add a date on the cover letter and make sure it is the same date as the day that you send it.
  • Keep the information on your cover letter short and directly to the point. If there is a possibility to cut out a word on your cover letter, always cut it out. Your cover letter should entice people to invite you to an interview where you can further elaborate.
  • Keep the language in your cover letter positive and confident.
  • Make sure all of the information on your cover letter is parallel to your resume application and to your LinkedIn account. Any inconsistencies will be immediately recognized as a means for concern.
  • If you have a company referral, definitely mention this in your cover letter.
  • When submitting your resume and cover letter, always look at the format in which they want the submission to be in. If it is not mentioned, PDF is the standard format.

What to Not Do on a Cover Letter

  • If there is a request for a cover letter with a resume, always send a cover letter.
  • Do not repeat your resume into your cover letter. Instead, elaborate on why you have made certain achievements.
  • Do not go past one page. Always keep your resume to a minimal size.
  • Do not use technical or complex working unless it is part of the job description.
  • Do not mention salary.
  • Your cover letter should only be work related. Do not share personal information about yourself or your family.
  • Do not ask questions that you have about the company or employer in the cover letter. Questions about the job, salary, schedule, benefits should be saved for at the end of the actual interview.
  • Stay clear of empty industry buzzwords. “Goal-oriented team player who consistently meets or exceeds company goals” has a lack-luster bland tone to it that has been repeated often losing value and credibility.
  • Do not use filler language to overemphasize things. “I single-handedly resolved or I worked overly hard to.... “  has a lack of evidence and supporting factors to give any substantial information to the hiring staff.  Again, this is an overly seen issue with cover letters and resumes.
